Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hematite powder suitable for a non-magnetic powder for a non-magnetic base layer of a magnetic recording medium with which improvement of surface smoothness can be expected through the calendaring treatment.
SOLUTION: The hematite powder for the non-magnetic base layer of the magnetic recording medium comprises an aggregate having a structure in which acicular hematite particles having a means diameter of the long axis of 0.005 to 0.3 μm and a mean diameter of the short axis of 0.0005 to 0.10 μm are aligned in a direction, where the shrinkage of a coating film formed on a non- magnetic support by applying a non-magnetic coating containing the hematite powder is 9.0 to 20%. The magnetic recording medium comprises the non- magnetic base layer containing the hematite powder.
