To obtain the subject composition useful as a selective herbicide by using a compound significantly simply obtained from easily available starting materials in a greatly high yield through the reaction of a specific toluene with chlorine and other additional reactions.
This herbicidal composition contains 2,6-dichloro-3- fluorobenzonitrile of formula I. The compound of formula I is preferably obtained by reacting 3-fluorotoluene of formula II with chlorine under conditions comprising a temperature of 0-100°C, etc., further reacting the obtained 2,6- dichloro-3-fluorotoluene with chlorine under conditions comprising 0-100°C, etc., reacting the obtained 2,6-dichloro-3-fluorobenzalchloride with water in the presence of a reaction auxiliary at 0-100°C, reacting the obtained 2,6-dichloro-3- fluorobenzaldehyde with hydroxylamine (acid adduct) at 0-100°C, and subsequently reacting the obtained 2,6-dichloro-3-fluoro-benzaldoxime of formula III with a dehydrating agent at 0-300°C under a pressure of 0.001-10 bar.
