To output optimum color image data to a color reproduction capability of a color image output device by providing a color image output device discrimination processing section for storing or sending coded color image data and discriminating color reproduction capability of the color image output device.
A color image output processing section 7 discriminates a color reproduction capability of an output device 10 having provision for color image and provides an expressed color discrimination signal 30 denoting the color reproduction capability. A decoding processing section 4 reads stored coded color data 23 and provides an output of compressed color image data 21. Furthermore, when the signal 30 indicates an index color image, the section 4 outputs an index color table 22. An index color image conversion section 6 generates index color image data 25 when the signal 30 indicates an index color image. An output color image selection processing section 8 provides an output of expanded color image data to the output device 10 having provision for color image when the signal 30 denotes a full color image.
