PURPOSE: To provide a high friction member to facilitate control of a friction factor and facilitate provision of a high friction factor and have excellent durability and to provide manufacture thereof.

CONSTITUTION: A porous sintered layer 3 of metallic powder 2 or a composite porous sintered layer of metallic powder and a high wear resistant material formed of a ceramic material is formed on the surface of a metallic base material 1 to form a high friction member. Such a high friction member is formed in such a manner that an organic binder is mixed in metallic powder alone or a mixture of metallic powder and a high wear resistant material is applied or sprayed against the surface of a metallic base material, and a coating layer or a spraying layer of the mixture is burnt.
