PURPOSE: To obtain the subject element drivable at low voltages, excellent in high contrast and heat resistance, useful for television screens, etc., by coating the surface of an electrically conductive base material with a specific coating liquid followed by evaporating the solvent to effect phase separation of a high molecular compound from the liquid crystal material and then by conducting crosslinking said polymeric compound.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of one party of a pair of electrically conductive base material is coated with a coating liquid prepared by dissolving or dispersing in a solvent (A) a liquid crystal material, (B) a high molecular compound for liquid crystal display, made up of recurring unit of the formula (R1 is 4-10C alkyl or 4-10C alkenyl; a and b are each a number except zero) and (C) a crosslinking agent bearing bifunctional or polyfunctional group reactive with the OH group in the formula. The solvent is then evaporated to effect phase separation of the high molecular compound from the liquid crystal material to form a composite membrane having such structure that the liquid crystal material has been filled in the continuous pores in the polymer matrix having three-dimensional network structure, and the high molecular compound is crosslinked with the crosslinking agent, thus affording the objective element.
