Abstract:

To provide a durable and reliable high pressure fuel pump with a pausing mechanism having a simple structure and an internal combustion engine having the high pressure fuel pump.

The high pressure fuel pump 41 for pressurizing fuel supplied to the internal combustion engine 100 includes a pump casing 41b for forming a compressing chamber 41e for compressing the fuel, a plunger 41a stored in the pump casing 41b advancingly and contractedly, and a lifter 6 arranged between a pump cam 11b formed at a camshaft 11a of the internal combustion engine 100 and the plunger 41a, and advancing and retreating in the same axial direction with the plunger 41a by the pump cam 11b. The lifter 6 includes shutting means 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 for shutting the transmission of the drive of the pump cam 11b to the plunger 41b according to the operation state of the internal combustion engine 100.
