To prevent generation of excessive friction with a cylinder in the side of the forward end side of a plunger driven by a cam.
A clearance between a plunger 16 and a cylinder 14 is made larger on the forward end side 16c side than that on the base end part 16a side, whereby even if the plunger 16 is tilted to the cylinder 14 pressed by a cam, the plunger 16 and the cylinder 14 come into contact with each other on the base end part 16a side earlier, and the plunger 16 is guided by the contact, so that the contact on the forward end part 16c side is restrained. Further, by the rotational friction of the cam, lateral force generated in a lifter and high pressure fuel pressure working from a pump chamber 15 to a plunger 16 do not function to increase the contact pressure on the base end part 16a side. Therefore, on either side, excessive friction is not caused. Accordingly, it is possible to prevent the lowering of discharge efficiency and seizure of a high pressure fuel pump.
