PURPOSE: To easily manufacture a uniform high purity Nb-Ti alloy sponge by reducing specific ratios of NbCl5 and TiCl4 into specific compsn. of Nb and Ti, by Na.
CONSTITUTION: NbCl5 and TiCl4 in which the ratio of 20W70wt.% Nb and the balance Ti is regulated are charged to a reactor; Na is added thereto and the mixture is heated to about 600W850°C. As the using amt. of said Na, its stoichiometry compositional one or about >0.5% one are suitably regulated. By this heating treatment, NbCl5 and TiCl4 are simultaneously reduced. The reaction products obtd. by this method are furthermore heated to about ≥900°C to conclude the reaction, are cooled, thereafter crushed, washed by a water soln. of hydrochloric acid and the thereafter subjected to vacuum drying. By this method, the titled sponge consisting of 20W70wt.% Nb and the balance Ti with inevitable impurities and having uniform compsn. is obtd.
