To provide the damping material having high strength and the production method of the material.
In this production, a porous silicon nitride sintered compact consisting of silicon nitride prismatic crystals which have ≤1μm average minor axis and each of which has an aspect ratio of ≥5, is filled with an aluminum- zinc based damping alloy. That is, the production of this damping material comprises: adding 5 to 15wt.% of a sintering aid to powdery silicon nitride having a ≤1μm average particle size; forming the resulting mixture into a formed body having a prescribed shape; heating this formed body at 1550 to 1800°C in an inert atmosphere to form a porous silicon nitride sintered compact that has 30 to 70vol.% open porosity and consists of silicon nitride prismatic crystal grains which have ≤1μm average minor axis and each of which has an aspect ratio of ≥5; and then, filling the open pores of the sintered body with a melt of an aluminum-zinc based damping alloy to produce the objective damping material.
