Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a magnesium-base alloy having a high strength and small in strength reduction at a high temp.

CONSTITUTION: A rapidly solidified magnesium-base alloy, having a composition which is represented by general formula MgaXbMc or MgaXbMcZd [where X means one or ≥2 elements out of Ni, and Cu, M means one or ≥2 kinds among Y, La, Ce, Nd, and Mm (misch metal), and Z means Ti and/or Zr] and where (a), (b), (c), and (d) are limited, by atom, to 75-90%, 2-10%, 2-15%, and 0.1-3%, respectively, is used. Hot plastic working is applied to this alloy, by which intermetallic compounds of Mg-X and Mg-M are precipitated and dispersed in a matrix phase composed of fine crystalline substances. Fine crystalline substances of 0.5μm average crystalline grain size are obtained and thermal stability at a high temp. is improved, and further, superfine intermetallic compounds of Mg-Y and Mg-X of 50nm grain size are dispersed and precipitated in the above matrix phase composed of fine crystalline substances and, as a result, remarkably high strength is produced and strength reduction is reduced even at a high temp.
