Abstract:
To obtain an incombustible oil absorbent capable of absorbing an oil heated at a high temp. in an instant.
This unexpanded vermiculite is prepared by impregnating a raw-material vermiculite with a specified chemical and further with a peroxide, if necessary. The one having 120-350°C expansion initiating temp. is expanded in an instant to the volume of 7-20 times the original volume when brought into contact with an oil heated at ≥120°C and absorbs the oil having a weight of 5-15 times its weight, and the burning oil is immediately extinguished. The expanded body having absorbed oil as such is utilized as a fertilizer or a soil conditioner.
