PURPOSE: To obtain the titled cermet having a high degree of sintering and high toughness and showing superior cutting performance when used as the material of a heavy cutting tool by compacting and sintering powders of the composite metallic carbonitride of Ti and W, AlN and W.
CONSTITUTION: This high toughness cermet for a cutting tool has a composition consisting of 15W45wt% composite metallic carbonitride of Ti and W, 0.5W5wt% ≥1 kind among AlN, Si3N4 and SiC, and the balance W with inevitable impurities. To the composition may be added 1W10wt% TiN. The cermet is obtd. by mixing the required amounts of powders of (Ti, W)CN, AlN, Si3N4, SiC, TiN and W, compacting the mixture, and sintering the green compact at about 2,200°C in vacuum. Since W as the component of a binding phase in the cermet and the components of a hard dispersed phase are made fine, the cermet shows superior wear resistance and high toughness when used as the material of a heavy cutting tool for cutting steel, etc.
