To obtain a highly moisture absorbent and ammonia deodorizing polyester fiber product having a good resistance to washing by converting part of an acid group introduced by graft process to its alkali metal salt.
This product is obtained by preparing a water-based emulsion comprising 0.5 to 10 wt.% of ethylenic unsaturated organic acid e.g. (meth) acrylic acid, 0.01 to 5 wt.% of hydrophobic free-radical initiator, 0.01 to 2 wt.% of phthalimide-based compound and a surface-active agent, by immersing a polyester fiber product in the emulsion, by subjecting it to graft process by heat treatment, by treating it with a water solution comprising a basic alkali metal compound and sequestering agent until its pH reaches ≥8 and <10 and by converting part of an acid group introduced by graft process to its alkali metal salt. The thus obtained product has a coefficient of moisture absorption (20°C×65%RH) of ≥5% and an ammonia deodorizing ability, and keeps the coefficient ≥4% without reducing its ammonia deodorizing ability even after a repeating washing test (JISL 0217-103 method) comprising 10 washings.
