To obtain a new compound useful as a catalyst in producing an olefin from a specific olefin through olefin metathesis.
This new compound is a compound of formula I {X is an anionic ligand; Z is a metal-contg. unidentate or tridentate ligand nonionically bound around a ruthenium atom; R1 and R2 are each H, a (substituted) hydrocarbon [a 1-50C alkyl, 2-50C alkenyl, (substituted) silyl, or the like] or joined together to form a ring; ligand L is an N-heterocyclic carbene of formula II [R1 to R4 are each H or a (substituted) hydrocarbon (a 1-50C alkyl, 2-50C alkenyl, 6-30C aryl, or the like); R3 and R4 are each a halogen, nitro, or the like] or the like), e.g. a compound of formula III. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by monosubstitution or disubstitution of a compound of formula IV in the 1st process followed by reacting the product with an appropriate dimer of Z in the 2nd process to afford a compound of formula V as one of the objective compounds.
