PURPOSE: To increase current capacity of a hot cathode and besides enlarge its life, by cutting a tubular body of thermion-radiant inorganic compound by wire-cutting electrical discharge machining method and then shaping it to a coil, so that the hot cathode can be manufactured.
CONSTITUTION: A tubular body 1 is manufactured by using thermion-radiant inorganic compound which is made of lanthanum-group elements from 57 to 71 in atomic numbers, including LaB6, or alkaline earth-group hexaboride, etc. The one-sided end is perforated to pass a wire 2 of a wire-cutting electrical discharge machine 3. When the tubular body 1 is then rotated around the axis and concurrently moved in the axial direction, a coil can be formed. Thus, a coil-shaped hot cathode, which is used in an ion source of an electron-impact type or the like, can be formed. Therefore, together with being capable of easily manufacturing the coil-shaped hot cathode, its current capacity can be increased, and besides its life can be enlarged.
