Abstract:
Preparation of a fatty acid composition comprises transesterifying a biomass obtained from Ulkenia sp. with e.g. at least one alcohol, preparing a solution in which the urea contains a part of the transesterified biomass and an organic solvent, concentrating the solution to form a precipitate containing the urea and at least one part of the unsaturated fatty acid ester and an aqueous fraction and separating the precipitate. Preparation of a fatty acid composition, with at least 70 wt.% of docosahexaenoic acid and/or its alkyl ester in the fatty acid composition containing fatty acid and/or its derivative, comprises transesterifying a biomass obtained from Ulkenia sp. with at least one alcohol, at least one docosahexaenoic acid alkyl ester and an unsaturated fatty acid ester, preparing a solution in which the urea contains a part of the transesterified biomass and an organic solvent, cooling or concentrating the solution to form a precipitate containing the urea and at least one part of the unsaturated fatty acid ester and an aqueous fraction and separating the precipitate from the aqueous fraction. An independent claim is also included for the fatty acid composition obtained by the above method.
