To provide a melting apparatus which is superior in melting efficiency and an electric power consumption rate.
This melting apparatus comprises: an electric resistance furnace 11 which passes an electric current to a raw material used for steelmaking and melts the raw material by using resistance heating; a visualization apparatus 12 that calculates the thermal conductivity by using the temperature detected by a thermocouple 23 placed in the electric resistance furnace 11, and determines the position of the melting temperature of a mass 8 which is produced from the raw material having adhered to the furnace wall, and makes the profile 20 inside the furnace, which is formed by connecting the positions. The visualization apparatus 12 further illustrates an electrode position in the furnace body, which is assumed based on the profile 20 inside the furnace, the length of an electrode and the action of an electrode lifting device 21, and displays the figure as a visible image.
