To provide an engine vehicle which can always discriminate an urban area from a suburban area positively with a simple structure and exhibit its performance sufficiently by suppressing potential pollution.
The accelerator open signal θTH of an accelerator pedal 10 and a brake operating signal BS of a brake pedal 11 are inputted into a frequency calculating circuit 14, and an accelerator opening change frequency FθTH and a brake operating frequency FBS which are outputted from the frequency calculating circuit 14 are incorporated into a calculating circuit 14. Determination of FθTH≥A or FBs≥B is conducted using prescribed constants A, B which are set and stored in a ROM 15. When the result of the determination is NO (negative), the driving environment of a vehicle is considered to be an urban area and driving is switched into driving with power of a battery 6. When the result is YES (affirmative), the driving environment is considered to be a suburban area and driving is switched into driving with power obtained by driving a generator 5 with an engine 4.
