To precisely control the rotation stop position of an engine at the time of automatic stop.SOLUTION: In stop position control for increasing a throttle opening immediately before the stop of the rotation of an engine 10, thereby making the amount of intake air in each of an expansion stroke stop cylinder and a compression stroke stop cylinder greater than that in a different cylinder, a vehicle control section 23 determines a timing for increasing the throttle opening on the basis of an engine speed and its decreasing rate so that a time from the increase of the throttle opening until the closure of an air intake valve of the expansion stroke stop cylinder becomes constant.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
