To provide a hydraulic auto tensioner which can improve reliability of a relief valve by making the end opening of a communication path formed in a rod never blocked.
The lower end of a sleeve 4 is press fitted into a sleeve fitting hole 3 formed in the bottom face of a cylinder 1. A valve fitting hole 16 and a communicating hole 17 which communicates the valve fitting hole 16 with a reservoir chamber 13 are provided in a rod 5, whose lower end is fitted slidably in the sleeve 4. A relief valve 20 is incorporated into the valve fitting hole 16. A seat member 31 is incorporated between a valve element 23 which opens and closes a valve hole 22 formed in a valve seat 21 of the relief valve 20 and a valve spring 24 which energizes the valve element 23 downward. The seat member 31 is made to be slidable in a large diameter hole portion 16a formed in the lower end of the valve fitting hole 16, and the seat member 31 pressed up by the release of the valve element 23 is stopped by the contact to a step portion 16b formed in the upper end of the large diameter hole portion 16a to regulate the opening amount of the valve element 23.
