To provide a hydraulic automatic tensioner favorable in a high speed following-up property and low temperature startability.
A passage 24 to communicate both of chambers 22, 23 over to each other is formed on a piston 16 free to slide to partition an inside of a cylinder 11 into the pressure chamber 22 and the reservoir chamber 23. A check valve 25 to close the passage 24 when pressure of hydraulic oil in the pressure chamber 22 rises higher than pressure of hydraulic oil in the reservoir chamber 23 is formed of a valve element 26 and a retainer 27 to regulate a stroke of the valve element 26. A high speed following-up property and low temperature startability are attempted by lightening the valve element 26 by forming it of ceramicsmaking the valve element 26 follow up a high speed pressure change of the pressure chamber 22 and a fine flow of hydraulic oil.
