To provide hydraulic machinery capable of suppressing water pressure pulsation resulting from an autorotation mode and an expansion and contraction mode of a whirl to be generated on a downstream side of a runner and a method for operating the same.
According to one embodiment, hydraulic machinery comprises a runner which converts energy which pressure water has into rotation energy, in which the runner comprises: a plurality of blades arranged like a ring; a crown which is connected to the blades from an upper side and has a lower end surface at a position surrounded by the blades; and a band connected to the blades from a lower side. The machinery further comprises: a main shaft which transmits the rotation energy of the runner to a dynamo; and a draft tube which is located on a downstream of the runner and into which water which drives the runner flows. The machinery further comprises a columnar member which is arranged on a rotary shaft of the main shaft at a lower part of the crown and has a diameter smaller than that of the lower end surface of the crown.
