To provide a hydraulic tensioner of which the cost is reduced by improving efficiency in assembly work of a check valve unit.
A tensioner 100 includes: a plunger which forms a hydraulic chamber together with a housing 110 mounted to an engine body and is supported in a forward and backward movable manner in the housing 110; and a check valve unit 120 which allows a hydraulic fluid to flow from an oil supply passage 101 into the hydraulic chamber 102 when giving a tension from the forward moving plunger to a chain and, on the other hand, restricts the hydraulic fluid from flowing out of the hydraulic chamber 102 to the oil supply passage 101 when a reaction force from the chain acts on the plunger in a backward direction. The oil supply passage 101 and the hydraulic chamber 102 are communicated via a valve oil passage 135, a valve chamber 151 and communication ports 145. A retainer 140 and a ball seat 130 are parts of a unitary retainer/seat element A which is integrally molded.
