To provide a hydrogen separation membrane capable of controlling formation of a carbon-containing layer, a hydrogen-separation membrane-electrolyte film joined product and a fuel cell.
The hydrogen separation membrane (10) has a first metal having hydrogen permeability and a second metal higher in affinity to carbon than the first metal. Because the second metal is higher in affinity to carbon than the first metal, the hydrogen separation membrane (10) causes carbonization of the second metal prior to that of the first metal, or makes the second metal serve as the carbon getter. The arrangement thus controls the formation of a carbon-containing layer on the surface of the hydrogen separation membrane (10) where an electrolyte film is to be formed.
