Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prepare a polymer material having excellent heat resistance, optical characteristics and moldability and high glass transition temp. and providing a molded item having small optical strain, by hydrogeneting at least a part of olefinically unsatd. groups of a polycyclic norbornene ring opening copolymer.

CONSTITUTION: A part or the whole of olefinically unsatd. groups of a polycyclic norbornene ring-opening copolymer contg. 90W10mol% repeating units of formula I or its alkyl derivative, 10W90mol% repeating units of formula II (wherein symbol ... is a single bond or a double bond) or its alkyl derivative having an intrinsic viscosity η of 0.01W20dl/g measured at 25°C in toluene are hydrogenated with hydrogen by using a hydrogenation catalyst to prepare a hydrogenated product of polycyclic norbornene ring-opening copolymer wherein at least 50% of bonds of formula V constituting main chains of formulas III and IV are single bonds. It is applicable in an optical field as well as in other wide application fields.
