Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogenation catalyst, methods for preparing the catalyst, 1,4-butanediol and/or tetrahydrofuran, etc.
SOLUTION: In a hydrogenation catalyst in which Ru, Sn, and other elements selected from the group VIII metals of the periodic table, which are added as required, are supported on a carbonaceous support, when the maximum diameter of a cross section which gives the largest cross section of catalyst particles is subjected to the linear analysis of an X-ray microanalyzer in conditions of a measuring interval of 3μm and the diameter of an electron beam of 2μm, the Ru strength of each measuring point is divided by the average of the Ru strength of all measuring points, and the frequency distribution of the quotients is obtained, the percentage occupied by the frequency below 50% of the average is below 35% of the total. In the preparation of the catalyst, the support is contacted with nitric acid in advance, and carboxylic acids are contacted with hydrogen and the catalyst for the hydrogenation of the carboxylic acids.
