PURPOSE: To carry out the hydrogenolysis of hydrocarbon oil in the reduced cost, as the life time of the catalyst is prolonged, by using a hydrocarbon polymer as an additive, when the hydrocarbon is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenolytic catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: When (A) a hydrocarbon oil (preferably containing a hydrocarbon fraction boiling over 300°C more than 5%, particularly more than 50% of 500°C-boiling fraction) is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of (B) a catalyst for hydrogenolysis such as a cobalt-molybdenum catalyst under the hydrogenolytic reaction conditions, (C) a hydrocarbon polymer, preferably a polyolefin such as polyethylene or polypropylene is added. The component (C) is added in an amount of 0.1-50wt.%, particularly 1-20wt.% based on the total weight of the hydrocarbon mixture.
