Abstract:
To provide the hydrothermal cleanup process.SOLUTION: Disclosed process and system for high-speed hydrothermal cleanup (HCU) are for rapid hydrolysis of renewable oil in both the renewable oil and a petroleum fraction, and reduction of inorganic and organic contaminants such as salts, minerals, metals, asphaltenes, polymers and precursors of coke. The process and system are characterized by a very short residence time, a high temperature, a high pressure, a turbulent flow and a hydrothermal operation. HCU and integrated gas-liquid separation system and process result in high yields of oil product including significantly reduced concentrations of inorganic and organic contaminants. The process can be operated to produce a concentrated clean glycerin byproduct and a short and long chain free fatty acid product stream. The integrated gas-liquid separation process and system are performed near atmospheric pressure utilizing water utilized in a cleanup process and energy imparted by the HCU reactor, and eliminates a need for vacuum distillation.SELECTED DRAWING: None
