Abstract:

To provide a new hydroxylated fullerene having high solubility in water and high active oxygen scavenging capacity and a method for easily and efficiently producing the hydroxylated fullerene in a mass at a low cost.

A hydroxylated fullerene having hydroxy group and a nitrogen-containing group comprising amino group and/or nitro group is synthesized by bringing fullerene into contact with oxygenated water and one or more compounds selected from ammonia and amine compounds. The hydroxylated fullerene is useful as an antioxidation agent and applied especially as cosmetics, skin lotions for external use, etc.
