Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a desired primary amine in high yield and selectivity by hydrogenating an impurity-containing cyanopropionaldehyde acetal in the presence of ammonia or primary amine and an alkali metal hydroxide.
SOLUTION: Cyanopropionaldehyde acetal containing cyanopropionaldehyde in impurity level, preferably represented by the formula (R is an aliphatic or aromatic group, preferably a 1-8C alkyl or 1-8C alkoxy) is brought into contact with hydrogen in the presence of ammonia or a primary amine (preferably 1-8C alkylamine, 2-8C polyethyleneamine, aminoethyelpiperazine or the like) and an alkali metal hydroxide to provide the objective aminobutylaldehydedimethyl acetal (hereinafter referred to as ABAA). Raney nickel and Raney cobalt are preferably used as the catalyst for catalytic hydrogenation. The method enables use of raw material containing impurities.
