PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system and an authentication method capable of surely preventing impersonation at the time of authentication and effectively reducing introduction burden and operational burden of the authentication device.SOLUTION: In the authentication system 1, data on a face image of a person to be authenticated is preliminarily stored in an IC card 5. At the time of authentication, while the face of a person to be authenticated is photographed with a camera 4, the face image data is read from the captured IC card 5. The photographed image of the face of the person to be authenticated acquired with the camera 4 is collated with the read face image data, and the collation result is output.
