Abstract:

PURPOSE: To manufacture a rare earth element-ammonium complex oxalate having a narrow grain size distribution by adding a rare earth element compound soln. to a soln. containing oxalate ions and ammonium ions, separating and drying the obtained precipitates.

CONSTITUTION: A second soln. containing the rare earth element compound is added to a first soln. containing oxalate ions and ammonium ions and generated precipitates are separated and optionally dried. Thereby small planar crystallized rare earth element-ammonium complex oxalate having 0.5 to 3 μm average size and <0.7 grain size distribution coefficient is obtained. The obtained complex oxalate is calcined at 600 to 1200°C, preferably at 800 to 1000°C. Thereby a rare earth element oxide having the same grain size distribution as that described above can be obtained.
