Abstract:
Apparatus (and a corresponding method) for inducing or increasing the flow of blood in a patient comprises a base (284) contour to seat near a central region of a patient's chest, a substantially inelastic belt (282) configured to wrap around the patient's chest, and a powered tightener (280) coupled to the base and to the extremities of the belt whereupon, upon receipt of a particular signal the tightener moves the belt extremities in directions to tighten the belt around the patient's chest and depress the base (284) towards the patient's chest. Control means are provided for periodically providing the actuating signal to the tightener. The apparatus may incorporate defibrillating means.
