Abstract:
An electrically conductive fibrous filler contains fibres of aluminium borate as the core material and a layer of an electrically conductive substance covering the core material or contains fibres of aluminium borate as the core material, a layer of titanium oxide covering the fibres of aluminium borate and a layer of an electrically conductive substance covering the layer of titanium oxide. The electrically conductive fibrous filler can be produced in a process in which a layer of an electrically conductive substance doped with antimony or fluorine is formed directly on the surface of fibres of aluminium borate, or in a process having the following steps: an intermediate layer of titanium oxide in an amount of 2 to 50 % by weight based on the weight of the fibres of aluminium borate is formed on the surface of the fibres of aluminium borate, and a layer of an electrically conductive substance doped with antimony or fluorine is then formed on the surface of the fibres of aluminium borate. The filler has a low specific electrical volume resistance and, when added in only a small amount to a base material, such as a resin, imparts to this a high conductivity per unit weight of the added filler. On admixing the filler with a base material, such as paper, leather, rubber, resin or paint, the electrically conductive substance applied to the surface of the filler fibres is not peeled off, so the electrical conductivity of the filler is not impaired in this process. Since the filler is white or transparent as such, the colour shade of such a base material can be changed as desired by admixing a colourant.
