PURPOSE: To obtain a homogenous aqueous polymer dispersion which has good dispersed-polymer stability and is especially suited for use as a coating composition to be applied to the inner surface of a beverage can by polymerizing a vinyl monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of a specific water-soluble epoxy compound.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl monomer is polymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water-soluble epoxy compound having a number-average mol.wt. of 70-5,000 and containing at least 0.1 quaternary ammonium salt group represented by the formula per molecule on the average to thereby obtain the objective dispersion. In the formula, R1, R2, and R3 are bonded to each other to form a heterocyclic ring in cooperation with the N; and Y- is an anion which is a 6-40C fatty acid radical. The obtained dispersion is an aqueous vinyl polymer dispersion containing the epoxy compound as a dispersant.
