PURPOSE: To connect a controllable damping valve to the side of a vibration damper via simple and inexpensive component members, starting from standard component members of a general vibration damper of minimum manufacturing cost.

CONSTITUTION: This hydraulic adjustable vibration damper, in particular for automobiles, includes a work cylinder, a piston dividing the work cylinder into two work chambers and fastened to a piston rod, at least one coaxial tube 7 surrounding the work cylinder, and a controllable damping valve located in a stationary and sealed manner on the side of the vibration damper, with a centering ring securing the damping valve. The centering ring 9 has a receiving hole 10 which is radially spaced from and surrounded by a wall 11, and the end of the wall facing the work cylinder 2 has a flange 12 which corresponds to the outer contour of an outer tube 18.
