PURPOSE: To improve an angle of view and to expand the applications of the liquid crystal display element by using a liquid crystal which is of specific values in both of the valves of refractive indices to an ordinary ray component and an extraordinary ray component.
CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display element 1 is constituted by sealing the liquid crystal 3 between two sheets of glass substrates 2 and 2. The phenomena of double refractions do not arise when an incident angle θ1 aligns to a normal H and, therefore, a retardation (phase delay) does not arise between the ordinary ray component and the extraordinary ray component, but the value of the retardation increases as the angle of the incident angle θ1 with the normal H expands. The value of the retardation generated at the incident angle θ1 is merely necessitated to be reduced in order to widen the angle of view of this liquid crystal display element 1. The liquid crystal having ≥1.6 in both of the values of the refractive indices to the ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray is, thereupon, used. The angle of view is improved by 10% by increasing the refractive index from the present 1.5 to 1.6 in such a manner.
