Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the title dimethylaminophthalide improved in yields and quality by performing the oxidation of a specified benzoic acid derivative in the presence of a catalyst comprising iron, a manganese compound and a chelating agent. CONSTITUTION:The purpose 3,3-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-6- dimethylaminophthalide is obtained by oxidizing 2-[4,4'-bis(dimethylamino) benzohydryl]-5-dimethylaminobenzoic acid of formula I in a basic aqueous solution of a pH of 7.0-14.0 in the presence of three catalysts of iron, a manganese compound and a chelating agent. Any basic compound such as a hydroxide or a carbonate of sodium or potassium or ammonia may be used to adjust the pH of the aqueous reaction solution to 7.0-14.0. The oxidation is usually performed at 50-100 deg.C, and it can be accomplished by introducing hydrogen peroxide, oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas as an oxidizing agent into the reaction solution under atmospheric or elevated pressure.
