PURPOSE: To prepare a compsn. as a dispersant by utilizing an aq. solvent and a non-aq. solvent.

CONSTITUTION: A method of dispersing pigment in an aq. system includes forming a mixture comprising the following (A), (B) and (C): (A) a reaction product of a hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acid compd. and an alkanolamine of the formula R1R2R3N; (B) a pigment; and (C) water in an amount sufficient to disperse the resultant product. Wherein. (A), (B) and (C) are mixed for a time sufficient to substantially disperse the pigment in water, wherein R1 is a hydroxyhydrocarbyl group, and R2 and R3 are each hydrogen, hydroxyhydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyl.
