PURPOSE: To display a document easy to see by designating the direction of the document at the time of recording it in a recording medium and converting the image of the document to image data in accordance with this direction.
CONSTITUTION: This device is provided with a scanner 8 as the converting means which reads the image of the document and converts it to image data, a first processing step of a program, a second processing step of the program as the recording means which records image data converted by the scanner 8 and the first processing step of the program in the recording medium like a magneto-optical disk 12, and a third processing step of the program as the designating means which designates the direction of the document like vertical writing or horizontal writing. The image of the document is converted into image data in accordance with the direction of the document designated by the scanner 8 and the processing step of the program. That is the image of the document is converted into image data in accordance with vertical writing or horizontal writing of the document.
