PURPOSE: To provide an ACL circuit with high quality without being affected by color control.

CONSTITUTION: After contrast adjustment are applied to luminance Y and color difference signals B-Y, R-Y supplied from input Ia-Ic by contrast circuits 1a-1c. respectively, primary color signals B, G, and R are generated from the output of bright circuits 7a-7c. The primary color signals B, G, and R are added by an adder after passing attenuators 11a-11c with different attenuator quantities, and a luminance signal (y) is reproduced from the output. The level of the luminance signal (y) is detected by an ACL level detection circuit 9, and a contrast control circuit 2 decreases constrast by controlling the contrast circuits 1a-1c when the level exceeds a prescribed value.
