PURPOSE: To provide the file restoration assistance system which facilitates the restoration of a file in an external storage device on an electronic computer and prevents other files from being destroyed if the file is deleted by mistake.

CONSTITUTION: This system consists of the external storage device and the computer l which uses it. and the electronic computer 1 generates a file label information file 7 by a file label information file generating means 5 in the absence of the file label information file 7 or updates a file label by a file label updating means 9 in the presence of the file label information file 7 when a process by a processing program 3 ends, and updates a data set label DSL by a data set label updating means 11 when file restoration is necessary by referring to the file label information file 7 to restore the target file.
