To provide an IC card reader capable of enhancing a detection efficiency of a communication system of an IC card.
The IC card reader is provided with: a communication processing section 6 capable of performing communication by a plurality of kinds of communication systems; a control section 7 for allowing the communication processing section 6 and an IC card to make communication with each other by a detected communication system that is a communication system represented by the reception of a response signal from the IC card when the communication processing section 6 transmits a communication signal for response confirmation adopting a plurality of kinds of the communication systems to the IC card; and a counter section 9 for counting the number of times when the control section 7 selects the detected communication systems by a plurality of kinds of communication systems, and the control section 7 allows the communication processing section 6 to perform communication and thereafter carries out polling processing wherein the control section 7 allows the communication processing section 6 to transmit the communication signal for response confirmation adopting a plurality of kinds of the communication systems to the IC card in higher orders of the communication systems counted by the counter section 9.
