Further, as to a method to measure the distance to the sea water surface 7, namely, the sea water surface position 9 by the range finder 1, a primary coil 20 and secondary coils 21 and 22 are arranged in the air and a high-frequency electric current is flowed in the primary coil 20 and an alternating field 2 is generated and a phase angle of the voltage causing on the secondary coil 21 at this time is measured and the sea water surface position 9 is measured based on this. A value deducting the sea ice surface position 10 from the sea water surface position 9 measured in this way by the arithmetic unit 5 is the thickness 11 of the sea ice.
