PURPOSE: To simply classify waste plastics or plastic refuse by adding a fluorescent label to plastics during or after production.
CONSTITUTION: 5-10,000 ppb of a fluorescent marker is applied to a plastic during or after manufacturing to render the plastic identifiable. For example, the dye in an object to be tested is excited by a laser means to generate scattered luminescence detected and recorded by a detector. This signal is used in order to start classifying operation. In the case of small granulated particles, electrostatic charge and deflection in an electric field are contained therein and, in the case of larger particles, a simple method comprising mechanical separation is contained. The dye is used in an amt. of 5-10,000 ppb and, since color strain is generated when a color marker of high density is used, the dye is pref. used in a concn. as low as possible.
