PURPOSE: To provide an ignition device for an internal combustion engine capable of attaining high ignition energy by shortening the charging period of the primary coil, and shortening the spark rest period without using a DC/DC converter and without reducing the ignition energy.
CONSTITUTION: In an ignition device for an internal combustion engine generating the induction current in the secondary coil for a high-voltage discharge via the on and off of a current in the primary coil, the primary coil and the secondary coil are constituted of multiple split coils 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B, and current intermitting means intermitting the currents to the split coils are connected to the split coils of the primary coil respectively. In the ignition device of the internal combustion engine performing multiple discharges, the charging period of the primary coil can be sharply shortened as compared with the conventional one, and the ignition resting period is sharply shortened.
