To provide an ignition device in which utilization efficiency of supplied energy is improved by suppressing the waste of energy caused by impedance mismatching and energy dissipation to heat.
An ignition device includes a voltage waveform generation means 2 and a high electric field application means 3. The voltage waveform generation means 2 generates the voltage waveform of the duration of time shorter than a time when impedance of mixture gas in an internal combustion engine is reduced, in a cycle including a short repetition cycle. The high electric field application means 3 applies a voltage to the internal combustion engine before or after applying an ignition pulse, on the basis of the voltage waveform generated by the voltage waveform generation means 2.
