To provide an illumination device capable of uniformly irradiating an illumination light to the whole rear face of a liquid crystal display panel as a backlight of a liquid crystal display device.
This has a reflector 3 of which one end is opened as an opening part 34 and the interior 33 is made a recessed type reflecting face, and a light source 4 to emit light into the reflector 3. The reflector 3 has a form in which an area of the opening part 34 is larger than the inner face of its bottom part 32, the inner face circumference of the bottom part 32 is made the main reflecting curved face 35 having a prescribed curvature of 1/R, and a light source insertion port 36 to pass through the peripheral wall of the bottom part 32 side of this reflector 3 along the direction orthogonal to the axial line of the reflector 3 is piercingly installed at one part of its main reflecting curved face 35. On the other hand, the light source 4 is inserted into the light source insertion port 36 directed to the optical axis toward the main reflecting curved face 35. Moreover, a small piece-like light shielding plate 38 to shield this light source 4 from the opening part 34 side is protruded and installed at the inner face of the reflector 3 close to the light source 4, and the liquid crystal display panel 1 is attached to the opening part 34.
