To provide an illumination apparatus and a projection display for suppressing the increase in cost of the entire device even when using light beams of four or more colors.
The illumination apparatus includes: a light source 10 emitting white light; mirrors 21 and 22 for separating red component light, green component light, and blue component light from the white light; liquid crystal panels 30R, 30G, and 30B for modulating component light of respective colors according to respective input signals; and a cross dichroic cube 50 for combining light emitted from the liquid crystal panels 30R, 30G, and 30B. The illumination apparatus furthermore includes a polarization adjustment element 30Ye which is disposed in a preceding stage of the liquid crystal panel 30G and adjusts polarization of yellow component light. The yellow component light emitted from the polarization adjustment element 30Ye enters the liquid crystal panel 30G.
