The illumination device for relaxation 1 comprises a light source 11, an operation part 12 to enter and set up a preadaptation period for adapting the eyes to an illumination environment such as an indoor environment, and a control part 13 for changing the brightness value of the light source 11 periodically after the predetermined preadaptation period set by the operation part 12 has passed. The control part 13 is provided with a light control signal generating part 131 which generates a given light control signal after an arbitrary preadaptation period entered from the operation part 12 has passed and a light control lighting unit 132 which works as a light control unit and controls the brightness value periodically by changing the average brightness value of a light emitting surface of the light source 11 according to the light control signal from the light control signal generating part 131.
